EP42 Show Notes!

Guys, are you all pooping at least two or three times a day?  I sure hope so, and after the amazing feedback I received from Red Radio EP42 there’s really no excuse anymore.  Y’all should be lean, mean, poop machines.

I call my cats poop machines sometimes.  But I digress.  On to the show notes!!!!

I think that’s all she wrote for EP42, kids.  Stay regular and tune in for the EP43 notes, coming up next!

EP43: A Raw Conversation with Sarma!

What do ODB and Sarma have in common?  A TON of things, evidently… but mostly, they’re both bona fide HUSTLERS.  For real.  Some of the (many) things I admire about this fine lady are her commitment, her hard work, and her determination - and if you’ve listened to Red Radio Episode Forty Three I don’t think I have to tell you why.

…but if I do, it’s because I fancy myself somewhat of a hustler, too.  So dear Sarma is a woman after my very own heart.  And to top it all off, she saved my canine boyfriend Leon Quinn Trujillo Sterling Brit’s precious life, and advocates for others to do the same.  Check out the handsome fella below.  Sorry, bitches - he’s taken!

Cozy up with your favorite organic green juice and join Erin Red for a conversation with raw food ambassador Sarma in Red Radio Episode Forty Three!  The ladies get fresh, discussing the birth and growth of NYC’s premiere raw dining experience, Pure Food & Wine, Sarma’s evolution towards veganism, and Erin Red’s love affair with Sarma’s rescued puppy, Leon.  It’s an uncooked love fest!  Plus, Erin Red addresses the impending “Baconopalypse” and more in The Vegan Scoop.  Delicious!  Please consider supporting Red Radio by visiting erinred.com and clicking the DONATE button, and subscribe to Red Radio on iTunes today!  If you love what you hear, leave a glowing review, or drop Erin Red a line at erinredradio@gmail.com.  You can also read her blog at erinred.tumblr.com, and find her on Facebook and Twitter @erinred.

EP42: Episode Number Two!

That’s right, y’all.  I finally did it.  An episode entirely devoted to human bowel movements, available to everyone on the internets.  Hooray for technology!

Seriously, though, Red Radio Episode Forty Two was a super fun episode to produce!  I read from some of my favorite books, answered some queries, and interviewed my colon’s BFF, Cassie Koropkin, a vegan colon therapist here in NYC.  Judging by the epic feedback I’ve received from you guys, I’m not the only one who enjoyed myself - this was a popular EP, and I think the ‘why’ is pretty obvious.  EVERYONE POOPS, guys.

It’s time to get down to the nitty gritty in Red Radio Episode Forty Two, also known as Episode “Number Two”!  Erin Red tackles every vegan’s favorite subject – POOPING! – with comprehensive information, book excerpts, a Compassionate Clip of the Week from Dr. Michael Greger, M.D., and an interview with vegan colon therapist Cassie Koropkin of ColonTherapyNYC.com.  Find out why colon health and a vegan lifestyle are so vital to your life, and never be ashamed of peering into the toilet again!  Remember:  EVERYONE POOPS!

EP40: Erin Red Welcomes Vegan Mafia Don Simone Reyes!

Uhhhh…. holy crap.  I interviewed Simone Reyes.  And it was one of those interviews that charged my vegan batteries BIG TIME - like after it was over I was in the mood to go picket something or demonstrate somewhere or bake a bunch of delicious vegan cookies and shove them down some omnivore’s throat.  Yeah, it was THAT AWESOME.

And for the record, we DID touch on the PETA thing.  Kinda apropos, because I’d just spoken about it with Ryan Patey in Red Radio EP39… and talk about different points of view!  For those of you who noticed that I seem to be waffling on the subject, well… I am.  Why?  Because I’m truly conflicted.  I have a rough time grilling people on the topic because every time I feel like I’ve secured a solid opinion, I dig a little deeper and find that I’m still quite undecided.  So, instead of pretending I know all the answers - SURPRISE!  I don’t! - I’d rather just continue to dissect the subject.  And dissect, I shall.  Keep your ears peeled.

In the meantime, give Red Radio Episode Forty a listen!  And remember, I’m on hiatus this week (due to my trip to Toronto for the Vegetarian Food Festival) and will return to the web-waves on Monday, September 17th with EP41 - not to worry!

Erin Red is thrilled to welcome hardcore animal activist Simone Reyes to Red Radio in Episode Forty!  Longtime vegan, blogger, reality television star and personal assistant to Super Vegan (and Erin Red’s idol) Russell Simmons, Simone lays it on thick while discussing some very powerful topics.  From her humble beginnings running around New York City with the Beastie Boys to her very public demonstrations for PETA, listen in on what makes this brave activist tick and refuel your vegan engines!  Plus, Erin Red weighs in on veganism as it relates to yoga – can you be an Omni Yogi? (Hell naw!)  Please consider supporting Red Radio by visiting erinred.com and clicking the DONATE button, and subscribe to Red Radio on iTunes today!  If you love what you hear, leave a glowing review, or drop Erin Red a line at erinredradio@gmail.com.  You can also read her blog at erinred.tumblr.com, and find her on Facebook and Twitter @erinred.

EP39: Shootin’ the T.O.F.U. with Ryan Patey!

Well hey there dear friends and listeners, and friends who are listeners!  I’m finally catching up on some of these blogs - I know I say it often, but my schedule just keeps getting crazier and crazier, and it’s every minute that goes by it’s harder to manage my time.  I’m going to have to figure out a way to create an extra day in the week so I can get all these backed up things finished.  For real!

Enough bitching - it’s kind of awesome that I’m blogging about Red Radio Episode Thirty Nine right now, because I’m sitting at Pearson International Airport in Toronto, waiting to fly back to NYC.  Sufficed to say, Canadians are pretty fantastic people.  Don’t believe me? Take a listen!  Ryan Patey will knock your socks off!  Srsly!

Grab a cup of (fair trade, almond milk) Hot Cocoa, put on your favorite (wool-free) flannel pajamas, hit mute on the hockey game, and tune into Red Radio Episode Thirty Nine!  Listen in as Erin Red has an in-depth, casual conversation with Ryan Patey of T.O.F.U. Magazine, everyone’s favorite digital vegan periodical.  Ryan and Red talk music, activism, feline YouTube sensations, PETA, authentic Canadiana, and much, much more – you’ll be all aboot it!  …and don’t pretend you’re not singing along with the outdo song.

EP38: Erin Red Tackles the Mailbag!

As usual, the Real Life Drama in Erin Red’s World is far from lacking - please excuse my tardiness lately, y’all!  What a glorious, passionate rollercoaster this life is.  Truth be told, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

In any case, have you heard Red Radio Episode Thirty Eight yet?  I’ve been getting some really amazing feedback on Twitter, which makes me feel pretty good because I spent a lot of extra time researching and writing this one.  It’s basically just me talking for 90 minutes.  I mean, it’s what I do.

Was your letter featured?  Did you learn something new, or change your mind about something?  Do you think I’m full of crap?  I LOVE your feedback - don’t hesitate to email me at erinredradio@gmail.com, f’real!

Erin Red returns to your emails to answer questions and tackle topics in Red Radio Episode Thirty Eight!  Digging deep into the virtual mailbag and uncovering some real gems, Red examines everything from vegan tattoos to unfertilized chickens’ eggs, from the truth about animal overpopulation to the nutritional power of flaxseeds, from the connection between human and non-human mothers to how to deal with omnivorous idols and loved ones.  Nearly 90 solid minutes of vegan knowledge - if ya don’t know, now ya know!

EP37: Red & Melisser present Dirty Birds Radio EP2!

Seriously, guys… it’s racy.  Not like straight up explicit or pornographic or unnecessary or anything.  But if you’re sitting in a cubicle at, say, the head office at Chik-fil-A or something…. you’re prolly gonna get canned.

If you haven’t already listened, my main homie Melisser Elliott and I are being a little inappropriate in Red Radio Episode Thirty Seven.  In what is also our second installment of Dirty Birds Radio, we answer emails from our inaugural Dirty Birds EP, with topics ranging from kinda cute (“my pug wants to watch me hump!”) to really real (“I’m in a sexless marriage!”), and Melisser and I have a ton of fun sharing advice and stories of our own.  There are curses!  And I say ‘boner’ within the first 10 minutes of the show!

Technical difficulties, be damned!

Red and Melisser return with Episode Two of Dirty Birds Radio, featured in Red Radio Episode Thirty Seven!  Armed with titillating questions from our eager listeners, your favorite Plant Powered Provocateurs cover a slew of sexual conundrums, from sexless marriages to interrupting animal companions to the ever-popular threesome dilemma.  Plus, Red and Melisser share their plans for the future of Dirty Birds Radio - you don’t want to miss this one!  Oh, and a gentle reminder that this EP may not necessarily be kid/work/parent/family friendly - EARMUFFS!

EP36: Vegan Positivity with Jaime K from Save The Kales!

Welp, I’ve officially completed one day of life without Facebook.  So far, no hospital visits or withdrawal seizures.  I think I may pull through this one, guys!  Seriously, though…it’s funny how that’s the first site I log into when I get online, and how I feel like I’m forgetting to do something if I don’t.  Sheesh.  The internet is a hell of a drug.

Anywho, I’m currently stuffing my face with an embarrassingly large salad - baby greens, arugula, roma tomatoes, avocado, marinated beets, organic sprouted tofu, black pepper and olive oil & red wine dressing - and am making sure to get this post up before I pass out.  I still owe you guys show notes for EP34 and EP35, which should reach your peepers by Thursday at the latest.  EP36 Notes soon after that.  That’s the whole point of this dang hiatus in the first place - to catch up on everything and get on track going forward.

Have you had the chance to listen to EP36 yet?  It’s pretty fantastic.  Nearly TWO WHOLE HOURS of uplifting vegan goodness.  I interview cutie-patootie and vegan powerhouse Jaime K from the infamous Save The Kales! Blog, which is now a 30min vegan cooking show (I know, AWESOME, right?!), I gab about a bunch of goings-on, and I share a really incredible TED Talk on vulnerability.  Talk about the feel-good-vegan-podcast of the week!  (Is that a thing?)

Everything’s coming up roses in Red Radio Episode Thirty Six!  Erin Red dishes about life, love, and the pursuit of veganism with the always adorable Jamie K, vegan advocate, writer, and gorgeous host of the delightful blog-turned-30 minute vegan cooking show Save The Kales!  Plus, a stirring Compassionate Clip of the Week discussing the power of vulnerability, and Erin Red’s new mini-segment, tentatively called the Red Radio Blotter.  The hits just keep on comin’! EP35: Ocean Activism with The Black Fish!

Holy crap you guys.  How did I get so behind on my blog posts!?  Every time I think I’m as busy as I can get, some other fabulous project comes along and next thing I know I’m scrambling to catch up.  My Fairy Godmother, Colleen Patrick-Goudreau, likes to call this ‘abundance management’.  I need more of this.  Also, anyone catch my MASSIVE typo?!  Throughout the episode, I’m saying EP35 left right and center…then I go and post the damn thing as EP34.  UGH - do I need more sleep or what?!  Anyway I fixed it up, but it may still appear as EP34 in some spots…sorry I’m such a hot mess!

In any case, I’m so super thrilled to be sharing EP35 with all y’all.  I learned SO MUCH speaking to Wietse from The Black Fish, and his enthusiasm and positivity were truly contagious (truly, truly, truly contagious).  I’m a lucky gal.  Definitely one of my favorite episodes to date.  Check it!

Erin Red gets deep with Red Radio Episode Thirty Five, featuring an incredible interview with Wietse van der Werf, Co-Founder and International Director of Europe-based ocean activism organization The Black Fish!  Learn about the devastating affect our appetites (for flesh and for profit) are having on our precious ocean and the myriad of life within it, and about the super important work Wietse and his crew are doing to protect the world’s most important resource.  Plus, a Compassionate Clip of the Week that introduces us to one of the most overfished beauties of the ocean – the Bluefin Tuna!

FRESH VEGGIES: Rob!

The fourth installment of my series on new vegans!

BASIC INFO

Name: rob ward
Age: 27
Occupation: kids mma instructor
Physical Activity Level: I spend most of my time up side down or sweating in some way. So high!
Vegan Since: late 2010 early 2011 I think not too sure.
Important Details about Me:  I live in the south ate like a southerner for a long time. My father died as a direct result of his diet. I miss him.

PRE VEGAN

What did your diet look like before you went vegan?
At first horrible I didn’t eat anything till It was fried. Then I was more health conscious but I still ate animals.

Did you have any preconceived notions about veganism before going vegan?  They were skinny and pale. However the idea of vegans was not one I ran into often coming up.

What was your turning point?  How did it come about?
Just hearing about it on citizen radio and knowing eating to live is important.

NEW VEGAN

How did you immediately feel emotionally, mentally, physically after
going vegan?  After one week?  After one month? So much energy it felt cleaner and I have been running harder ever since.

How did your friends and family react to your lifestyle change?
kinda meh. They were not to surprised.

Were there any books that motivated you to change, or helped with your
transition? Not really books however twitter and red have helped tremendously

Did you have any slip-ups?  How did you deal with it?
Yes with rage and renewed vigor.

How did you deal with your non-vegan items (kept them, replaced them,
donated them)? I really haven’t had to deal with non vegan clothing I’d imagine I’d donate them however.

CURRENT VEGAN

Do you miss anything?
Just convenience.

What has been your biggest challenge so far? My laziness in the kitchen is by far my worst enemy. Working on it now.

What has been the greatest reward?
Energy + ethical = win!!

What are some new  foods, cuisines or products you’ve tried since going vegan? Tempeh im still struggling with how to properly cook it though.

Is your significant other/roommate/family vegan?  Have they become curious?
She is not vegan although she is more health conscious.

FUTURE VEGAN

Do you plan to stay vegan?  Why or why not? Hell yeah, simply because I have never felt better. It’s harder to go back once you are vegan. Kinda like going black.

What vegan books would you like to read?  Vegan movies to see?  Vegan
locations to visit? Vegan books I lobe are cook books, vegan movies by far “fat sick and tired” is my favorite.

Have you encouraged your loved ones to make changes?  How?  What has
been the reaction? Yes I have, I have pretty much just told them eat more greens be more health conscious. Many have seen my going vegan and the results of it and their reaction has been everything from ” ok let’s do it” to ” I can’t do that”

Do you think veganism is a realistic solution for the masses?  Why or why not? Absolutely, it’s realistic because being vegan is sufficient in nutrients and it is sustainable. On top of that it fixes a lot of health problems people face now. The real question is is it realistic for many to remain non vegan?
